How much does it cost to rewire a house?

It depends mostly on the number of bedrooms, whether the cables are chased into the walls, and how many sockets and lights you want. The rewiring cost calculator above gives you a range in under a minute. Harry then fixes the price after a look at the house, because the condition of what is behind the walls is what moves the figure.

What is an EICR and how long is it valid for?

An EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) is a full inspection and test of the wiring, fuse board and circuits in a property. For a rented home in England it has to be done at least every 5 years under the 2020 regulations, and tenants need a copy. For an owner-occupied home, every 10 years is the usual guide, or when you buy or sell.

What do C1, C2, C3 and FI mean on an EICR?

C1 means danger present, and it is made safe straight away. C2 means potentially dangerous and needs putting right. FI means further investigation is needed. C3 is a recommended improvement, not a fail. A report with any C1, C2 or FI is unsatisfactory until the work is done.

Why does my fuse box keep tripping?

Usually a faulty appliance, water getting into an outdoor socket or light, or a fault on one circuit. Unplug everything on the circuit that tripped and try it once. If it trips again with nothing plugged in, leave it off and send Harry a photo of the board on WhatsApp.

Do I need a new fuse board to get an EV charger?

Not always. A modern consumer unit with RCD protection and a spare way is often fine. Older boards with wire fuses, or a supply without enough room, may need upgrading first. Harry checks the board and supply before any charger goes on the wall, and tells you before you commit.
