Who it is for
Signs your house needs a rewire
You do not need to wait for something to go wrong. These are the things that usually point to a rewire.
An old fuse box with wire fuses
A board with pull-out fuses often means the wiring behind it is just as old.
Black rubber or fabric-covered cable
Cable from before the 1970s goes brittle and the insulation cracks. If you can see it at a light or socket, it is time.
Round-pin sockets or sockets on the skirting
Old style sockets usually mean the circuits have not been updated in decades.
Not enough sockets anywhere
Extension leads in every room is a sign the wiring was designed for a different era.
Scorch marks or warm sockets
Brown marks on a socket or switch, or one that feels warm, needs looking at now.
An EICR that came back unsatisfactory
Lots of C2 codes across different circuits can make a rewire better value than patching each one.
What is included
What a full rewire includes
This is what goes on a written rewire quote. Partial rewires cover the same lines for just the rooms you choose.

How it runs
How a rewire runs, day by day
A rewire is done in two stages: first fix while the walls are open, and second fix once they are plastered.
- BeforeSurvey and written quoteHarry visits, agrees the layout with you and sends a written price. You agree a start date.
- Day 1Floors up, old circuits offFurniture moved back, floorboards lifted where needed and the old circuits made dead.
- Day 2First fixNew cable runs to every point, chased into the walls or clipped for trunking. The house keeps some power where it can.
- Middle daysPlasteringYour plasterer makes good the chases. Harry can tell you how long to leave between first and second fix.
- Last daySecond fix and new boardSockets, switches and lights fitted, the new consumer unit connected, and every circuit tested.
- AfterCertificate and walk roundHarry walks you round the new board and sends your Electrical Installation Certificate and Building Regulations certificate.

rewires

WhatsApp HarryHow much does it cost to rewire a house?
A full rewire with Harry starts from £2,500 for a 1 bed and £3,500 for a 3 bed house, including a new fuse board and cables chased into the walls. The real price depends on the size, how many sockets and lights you want, and whether the house is empty. The rewiring cost calculator gives you a range, and Harry confirms a fixed price after a visit.
How long does it take to rewire a house?
It depends on the size of the house and whether it is empty. First fix and second fix are separate visits with plastering in between, so the job runs over several days. Harry gives you the plan with your quote.
How often should a house be rewired?
There is no fixed date. Wiring is often good for decades, but the condition matters more than the age. An EICR tells you whether your wiring is still safe or needs replacing.
Do I need to rewire my house?
Not always. If you have old rubber or fabric cable, a wire-fuse box, or an EICR full of C2 codes, a rewire is likely. If the wiring is PVC and in good order, a new consumer unit and a few repairs may be enough. Harry tells you straight which it is.
Can I stay in the house during a rewire?
Often yes, but it is dusty and the power is off for parts of each day. Many people clear one room at a time or stay elsewhere for the noisiest days. Harry plans around you.
What is a partial rewire?
Rewiring part of the house, such as a kitchen, an extension or one floor, instead of the whole thing. It makes sense when the rest of the wiring tests well.
Do I get a certificate after a rewire?
Yes. You get an Electrical Installation Certificate, and because a rewire is notifiable under Part P, Harry notifies Building Control through NAPIT so you also receive a Building Regulations compliance certificate.
