Who it is for
Signs it is time for a home charger
Most people ring Harry about a charger for one of these reasons.
A three-pin plug lead across the drive
Charging from a normal socket is slow and hard on the socket and extension lead. A wall charger is quicker and built for the job.
Paying public charger prices
Rapid chargers cost far more per mile than home charging on a cheap overnight tariff.
A new or second-hand EV on order
Getting the charger fitted before the car arrives means it is ready on day one.
An old charger that keeps dropping out
Older units can lose their app connection or trip. A modern smart charger fixes that.
Moving to an overnight tariff
A smart charger can be scheduled so the car only charges in the cheap hours.
A second EV in the house
Two cars on one supply needs load management so the main fuse is not overloaded. Harry checks this first.

EV chargers

WhatsApp HarryHow much to install an EV charger?
A standard home EV charger fitted by Harry starts from £850. Smart and tethered chargers are from £950. The price goes up with a smart or tethered unit, a long cable run, or if your fuse board needs replacing first. Use the EV price tool for a guide in about a minute, and Harry confirms a fixed price before booking.
How long does it take to install an EV charger?
Most home chargers are fitted in one day. A long cable run, a detached garage or a fuse board upgrade at the same time can add time, and Harry tells you that when he prices the job.
Is there a grant for an EV charger?
The OZEV chargepoint grant in England is now aimed at people who rent, own a flat, or are landlords, not most homeowners with a driveway, and it has to be claimed through an OZEV approved installer. Harry is not OZEV approved at the moment, so his prices do not include a grant. Check the current rules on GOV.UK.
Do I need planning permission for an EV charger?
Usually not. Most wall-mounted chargers at a house in England fall under permitted development. Listed buildings, conservation areas and flats can be different, so check with your council or landlord if that applies to you.
Does my fuse board need changing for an EV charger?
Not always. Many modern boards have room for the extra circuit. Older boards with no spare way or no RCD protection may need replacing first. Harry checks from your photos and tells you before you book.
Does the charger have to be a smart charger?
Yes. Under the Electric Vehicles (Smart Charge Points) Regulations 2021, home chargers sold in Great Britain must be smart, with off-peak charging set up by default. That is also how you get the cheap overnight rate.
