Who it is for

When people call about outdoor electrics

The usual reasons.

  • Extension leads through the window

For the mower, jet washer or garden lights. An outdoor socket is safer and tidier.

  • The house trips when it rains

Water in an old outdoor socket or junction box is a very common cause.

  • A cracked or soil-filled outdoor box

Exposed connections outdoors need replacing, not taping up.

  • A new shed, garage or garden room

It needs a proper supply, usually armoured cable from the house.

  • A dark drive or back door

A security light on a sensor makes it safer to come and go.

  • Timed lighting or a pond pump

A timer socket or switched spur sorts it.

WhatsApp Harry
How much to install an outdoor socket?

It depends how far it is from the nearest circuit and whether the cable goes through a wall or across the garden. Send Harry a photo of where you want it and he will price it.

Do outdoor sockets need RCD protection?

Yes. Sockets used outdoors must have RCD protection under BS 7671, so a fault trips the power before it can hurt anyone.

Why does my house trip when it rains?

Water getting into an outdoor socket, light or junction box is one of the most common causes. Harry has replaced boxes found full of soil and water.

Can you run power to my shed or garden room?

Yes. That usually means armoured cable from the house, buried or clipped, to a small board in the outbuilding.

Do I need a certificate for an outdoor socket?

A new circuit is notifiable under Part P. Adding a socket to an existing circuit is not, but it should still be tested. Harry certifies the work either way.
