Who it is for
Signs your fuse box needs replacing
Fuse box, fuse board and consumer unit are the same thing. These are the signs yours is due.
Pull-out fuses with wire in them
A rewireable fuse box gives no protection against electric shock. It is the most common reason people replace a board.
Breakers that trip when the kettle and toaster go on together
One RCD covering half the house means one fault can knock out lots of circuits at once.
A plastic consumer unit
Since 2016 new domestic boards must be non-combustible, usually metal. Plastic ones are not dangerous by default, but are often flagged on an EICR.
An EICR that coded the board C2
No RCD protection on sockets or a damaged board will be coded, and needs fixing.
Scorch marks, buzzing or a hot smell
Turn off the main switch if it is safe to do so, and get it looked at straight away.
An EV charger or new circuit on the way
An old board may have no spare way or the wrong protection for a new circuit.

WhatsApp HarryHow much is a new fuse box?
A fuse board replacement from Harry starts from £600 for a flat or 1 to 2 bed house, £650 for 3 bed and £800 for 4 bed or bigger, with RCBOs, surge protection, testing and the certificate. Larger homes with more circuits cost more. Harry confirms a fixed price from a photo of your board.
What is a consumer unit?
A consumer unit is the modern name for a fuse box or fuse board. It is the box where your electricity is split into circuits, with breakers that switch off when there is a fault.
Fuse box vs consumer unit: is there a difference?
People use both names for the same thing. 'Fuse box' usually means an older board with pull-out wire fuses. 'Consumer unit' usually means a modern board with breakers and RCD protection.
How long does it take to replace a fuse box?
Most are done in a day. The power is off for part of it. If the old circuits have faults, finding and fixing them can add time.
Why does my fuse box keep tripping?
Usually a faulty appliance, water getting into an outdoor socket or light, or a damaged cable. Unplug everything and reset. If it trips again with nothing plugged in, the fault is in the wiring and needs an electrician.
Do I need a certificate for a new fuse board?
Yes. Replacing a consumer unit is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations. Harry notifies Building Control through NAPIT and you get an Electrical Installation Certificate plus a Building Regulations compliance certificate.
