Who it is for

What counts as an electrical emergency

Some faults need sorting now. Others can wait for a normal visit. These are the ones not to ignore.

  • A burning smell from a socket or the fuse board

Switch off at the main switch if it is safe to reach. If there is smoke or fire, get out and ring 999.

  • A socket or switch that sparked or melted

Stop using it, switch that circuit off at the board and do not plug anything back in.

  • Water coming through a light or near the board

Turn the power off at the main switch if you can do so without touching anything wet.

  • No power and the board will not reset

If a switch trips straight back off with everything unplugged, there is a fault in the wiring.

  • Exposed or damaged cable

From a drill, a nail or an animal. Keep people away and switch the circuit off.

  • A tingle or shock from an appliance or tap

This can mean an earthing fault. Stop using it and get it checked as soon as possible.

WhatsApp Harry
What should I do in a power cut?

Check whether the neighbours have power. If the street is out, it is a network power cut: ring 105 to report it and wait for the network to fix it. If it is just your house, look at your fuse board for a tripped switch.

How much does an emergency electrician cost?

With Harry, a weekday call-out (Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm) is £80 for the first hour and £50 an hour after that. Out of hours it is £120 for the first hour. Parts and any bigger repair are priced before the work is done.

Is a burning smell from a socket an emergency?

Yes. Stop using it, switch off that circuit or the main switch if it is safe, and get it checked. If there is smoke or fire, leave the house and ring 999.

My fuse board keeps tripping at night. Can it wait?

If everything is safe once the circuit is off and nothing smells or sparks, it can often wait for a normal visit. Ring or WhatsApp Harry and he will tell you honestly.
