smoke alarms

WhatsApp HarryWhy is my hard wired smoke alarm beeping?
A single chirp every so often usually means the backup battery is low or the alarm has reached the end of its life. Check the date on the back. If it is past it, the alarm needs replacing.
Why does my smoke alarm keep beeping after changing the battery?
Some alarms need resetting after a battery change, and some beep because the whole unit has expired. Hold the test button to reset. If it carries on, replace it.
Do landlords need hard wired smoke alarms?
Landlords in England must have at least one working smoke alarm on every storey used as living space, and a carbon monoxide alarm in rooms with a fixed combustion appliance (not gas cookers). The law does not say they must be hard wired, but mains linked alarms are more reliable.
How long do smoke alarms last?
Most are made to last about ten years. The expiry date is printed on the back.
Where should smoke alarms go?
In the hall and on every landing as a minimum, with a heat alarm in the kitchen. Harry suggests a layout for your house.
